When John L. opened his small fishing department within Brown Derby in 1971, he decided to call his store Bass Pro Shops because it was the most descriptive of his mission to be a leading specialist shop for bass gear. A few years later, in 1974, Bass Pro Shops published its first catalog. A 180-page catalog of about 1,500 items was distributed throughout 20 states.
